Kamenari–Lepetane Ferry Guide

A five-minute crossing that saves the long drive around the inner bay, and when you should ignore it and drive around anyway

What the ferry is

The Kamenari–Lepetane ferry is a short roll-on-roll-off car boat that crosses the Verige strait, the narrowest throat of the Bay of Kotor, where the inner and outer bays almost pinch shut. The crossing is only about 2.3 km as the gull flies and takes roughly five minutes on the water, though the full dwell (queue, load, cross, unload) usually runs twenty minutes or so. For anyone driving between Herceg Novi, Tivat and Budva it is the difference between a short bay-hop and a long loop around Kotor's inner shore.

Why the bay shape makes it useful

The Bay of Kotor is shaped like two linked lungs. The outer bay (Herceg Novi, Bijela, Kamenari) opens to the Adriatic. The inner bay (Risan, Perast, Kotor) is enclosed. Between them, the Verige strait is less than 350 metres wide at its tightest, a natural choke point that the Venetians once closed with a chain strung between fortresses. Driving from Herceg Novi around the inner bay to Tivat is roughly 45 km via the magistrala through Kotor. Crossing at Kamenari cuts it to around 15 km. The saving is time, not distance alone: you skip Kotor's town traffic, the harbourfront bottleneck and a slow magistrala section that tightens to a single lane in summer.

When the ferry wins

The ferry is usually the right call if you are heading from Herceg Novi to Tivat Airport, to Porto Montenegro, to Luštica, or on to Budva. It is almost always faster in July and August when the Kotor waterfront is at a crawl, and it is cheaper than the equivalent fuel-and-time cost of driving around. It is also the right call late at night, the service runs 24 hours with reduced frequency in the small hours, so a late flight into Tivat and a drive back to Herceg Novi can use the short hop rather than the long loop.

When to drive around instead

Skip the ferry if your actual destination is Kotor, Perast, Risan or the inner bay, driving the magistrala round is the point, and you would otherwise double back. Skip it in rough southerly weather, when loading can be delayed. Getting to the Kamenari ramp

From Herceg Novi, follow the magistrala east through Meljine, Zelenika, Kumbor and Baošići. Bijela comes next, and then Kamenari, a small settlement built around the ferry ramp. The ramp is signed from the main road and there is a holding lane on the verge. Queueing cars back up on the magistrala in peak hours; join the end of the line and inch forward. Pedestrians and cyclists board free; cars are charged per vehicle by size. A cash booth handles most traffic; contactless card is accepted on newer vessels but do not rely on it.

What you see on the crossing

Five minutes on deck in the Verige strait is one of the best short views in the bay. Look back toward Kamenari to see the outer bay sweep west to Herceg Novi with Orjen's limestone wall rising behind. Look forward toward Lepetane to see the inner bay open up toward Perast and the Our Lady of the Rocks islet. On the strait itself, shipwrecks from several eras lie on the seabed, and you will often pass sailing yachts threading through the same narrow throat at the same moment. Dolphins are not uncommon in the colder months.

At Lepetane, what happens next

Lepetane is a quiet waterfront village on the Tivat side. Unloading is brisk; follow the ramp up onto the local road and you are on the short coast road into Tivat centre within fifteen minutes. From Lepetane it is a short drive south through Donja Lastva into Tivat, with Porto Montenegro marina on the waterfront and Tivat Airport tucked inland. Heading on to Budva, continue south on the main coast road up and over the Vrmac ridge.

Frequency and service

Multiple operators run ferries across the strait and sailings overlap, so the practical frequency is high, in daylight hours you rarely wait more than fifteen minutes. Service is 24/7 with reduced overnight frequency. We avoid quoting exact schedules or fares here because operators adjust both seasonally; check the current timetable posted at the ramp or on the Plavi Horizonti / Montenegro Lines boards before committing to a tight connection.

Fuel, food, facilities

A petrol station sits on the Kamenari side a few hundred metres before the ramp, and another on the Lepetane side just after disembarkation, convenient either way. There is a small café and a bakery at Kamenari for the queue wait. Lepetane has a waterfront konoba or two for a slow lunch if you find yourself early for a flight. No public toilets at the ramps themselves; use the café.

Practical tips

  • Book nothing in advance. The ferry is turn-up-and-go and cannot be reserved.
  • Fuel tank first. Fill up before joining the queue so you are not reshuffling inside the loading zone.
  • Hand brake on during the crossing. Leave the car in gear on manuals.
  • Summer weekends queue. A Saturday morning in August can mean a thirty-minute wait to board. Go early or go late.
  • Rental insurance. The crossing is covered by standard policies, no extra paperwork.
