The rational default for a renter mixing a Herceg Novi base with long inland drives, refined, quick enough, and economical on the motorway.

At a glance
Who is this car for?
The default mid-size for renters who want one car that will do the Herceg Novi Old Town perimeter on day one and the Smokovac-Mateševo motorway on day four without complaint.
- Couples mixing coast and canyon
- Business travellers on week-long hires
- Drivers planning the BiH or Croatia border run
Best regional use
DSG picks the right ratio on the Herceg Novi–Lovćen hairpins without any thinking, the 2.0 TDI holds 130 km/h on the motorway section up to Podgorica at 4.3 L/100 km, and the cabin quiet makes the 3-hour push to Žabljak genuinely relaxing.
On Montenegro roads
Behind the wheel
The Golf Mk8 is the rational benchmark C-segment hatch and on a Herceg Novi rental it is the pick for the renter who is fussy about the way a car drives. The 2.0 TDI 150 hp diesel with the 7-speed DSG is the combination to ask for, not the entry 2.0 TDI 115 which is fine but feels slower than the spec sheet reads. The ride is tautly damped rather than soft, the steering is noticeably more accurate than a Megane's, and the DSG reads gradients with something close to telepathy on the Vrbanj climb. The cabin is quieter at 130 km/h than anything else here.
On Montenegro roads
The Golf is the most rewarding long-loop car from a Herceg Novi base. The cross-border push to Mostar via Trebinje is dispatched in third, fourth and sixth gears with the DSG refusing to hunt; the descent off the Lastva ridge back into Montenegro uses engine braking cleanly without a foot on the pedal. The 50 minute Dubrovnik run via Debeli Brijeg is the Golf's home territory, 110 km/h cruise, 4.3 L/100 km indicated, cabin quiet enough for a phone call between border posts. The Kamenari ferry crossing is uneventful, and the inner-bay loop around to Perast hides no rough sections the Mk8 cannot dispatch.
Space and load
At 381 litres seats-up and 1,237 litres seats-down the Golf's boot is marginally smaller than the Megane's but the shape is better, a lower load lip, squarer sides, a removable parcel shelf that stows inside the boot rather than needing a hotel-room corner. Four adults' cabin luggage fits without the parcel shelf removed, a full hiking load for two heading up onto Orjen travels seats-up with room for day-bags on top. The Golf also takes airline-regulation roof bars cleanly if a renter needs to bring a SUP across from a Dubrovnik Airport meet.

Best journeys for this car
The Golf's Herceg Novi customer is the driver who has rented the Clio before and wanted more. Returning visitors doing their third or fourth Montenegro trip gravitate to it, business travellers on a Podgorica plus Herceg Novi hybrid week rate it for the quiet motorway cabin. Couples renting for two weeks with a multi-day cross-border loop in the middle pick it over the 308 because the cabin feels newer. It is more car than a bay-only stay needs, and the DSG software is marginally less robust than a conventional auto when cold; let it warm for 30 seconds before pulling away from the Igalo hotel garage on a January morning.
Practical notes
Diesel economy is genuinely impressive, 4.3 L/100 km at a steady 120 km/h, closer to 4.8 in mixed Herceg Novi use, the 45-litre tank pushes close to 1,000 km between fills in gentle driving. The 4.29 m length is easy at the Kanli Kula overflow lot and at the metered Skver bays, the DSG creeps smoothly in stop-start summer-evening crawls along the Igalo seafront and the stop-start system is genuinely refined. Front-wheel drive on all-season rubber handles coastal winter cleanly, where Herceg Novi sees the mildest temperatures in Montenegro and frost is rare even in January.
The verdict
Pick the Golf if you care about how the car drives on a multi-day Herceg Novi loop with cross-border legs and you want the most refined cabin in this fleet. Skip it if your week is entirely inside the bay at low speeds, the Clio and C3 are cheaper answers to that brief.
